Establishing, restoring and sustaining protected-area
integrity
Conservation Outcomes works alongside protected-area management and conservation partners to develop capable ranger teams, effective leadership and sound operational systems, proven across some of Africa’s most complex protected areas.
Our Approach
OUR MISSION
Conservation Outcomes is committed to restoring and maintaining the integrity of protected areas across Africa and beyond through trusted partnerships and a proven, holistic approach anchored in the rigorous recruitment, selection, training and development of field rangers to the highest standards of integrity, discipline, professionalism, and operational capability.

WHO WE ARE
Proven impact and experience
Established in 2008, Conservation Outcomes brings together a team of African conservation professionals with over 150 years of combined experience in conservation law enforcement, protected area management and field ranger training.
Every member of our team holds the experience and qualifications their role requires. Our instructors draw directly on extensive operational backgrounds, ensuring that every programme and activity we deliver is grounded in tried, tested and proven principles and best practice, and then tailored to the site-specific requirements of each client and protected area.
Our work is strengthened by extensive operational knowledge, integrity and cultural fluency, including proficiency in multiple African languages, giving us a distinct edge in the field.
Our Team
OUR CAPABILITIES
Operational capability for protected areas
Protected areas face unique combinations of operational, environmental and organisational challenges. Protection requires motivated and disciplined personnel, capable leadership, sound planning, practical operational systems, suitable infrastructure and ongoing organisational support.
Conservation Outcomes works alongside management to assess constraints and requirements, guide and implement practical and proven solutions, and strengthen the people, leadership and systems needed to establish and maintain effective control.
Strategic Needs Assessment and Protected Area Security Planning
An in situ Strategic Needs Assessment identifies threats and pressures, ecological and environmental conservation priorities, terrain and topography, community dynamics, human resource capacity and infrastructure. In conjunction with management, we develop a practical, phased and sustainable Protected Area Security Plan aligned with the area's conservation objectives, and then guide and support its implementation.
Field Ranger Recruitment, Selection, Training and Assessment
Structured recruitment, screening and rigorous selection identify candidates with the requisite aptitude, fitness, psychological and cognitive capabilities, attitude and character integrity required for field ranger duties. Only those who pass selection proceed to Basic Field Ranger Training. Further development is based on demonstrated competence and operational requirements.
Operational Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation
Plans are only as good as their implementation. We support management in translating the Protected Area Security Plan into daily field operations, advise on the personnel, infrastructure and equipment required, and measure performance through periodic monitoring, evaluation and reassessment.
Leadership Development, Field Mentorship and Specialist Operational Training
Leadership potential is identified during training and developed through progressive leadership development courses and actions. Through our Mentorship Programme, experienced protected area managers work alongside resident management teams to guide implementation and transfer critical knowledge. Specialist training includes advanced tactical training, marine and freshwater operations, investigations and operational intelligence, dangerous game handling and rhino monitoring.
OUR HOLISTIC APPROACH
A structured and proven methodology
Our approach integrates the people, leadership, systems and resources needed to develop or strengthen effective operations and build the internal capability required to establish and maintain protected-area integrity. It is applied through a practical, phased and site-specific process informed by lessons learnt across diverse protected-area environments.
01
Assess
Each programme begins with an in situ Strategic Needs Assessment of threats and pressures, ecological and conservation priorities, terrain and topography, community dynamics, human resource capacity and infrastructure. It identifies strengths, constraints and operational requirements, with findings validated with management to establish an agreed basis for planning and responsible resource allocation.
02
Plan
Working with protected-area management, we develop a site-specific Protected Area Security Plan aligned with the area’s conservation objectives, operational priorities and available resources. The Plan defines practical, phased and sustainable actions designed first to establish a solid operational foundation built on tried, tested and proven principles, and then to build capability. Progression to each successive phase depends on achieving the objectives of the preceding phase. It specifies the personnel, recruitment, selection, training, infrastructure, equipment and operational requirements needed to establish and maintain area integrity.
03
Recruit, Select and Train
Structured recruitment, screening and rigorous selection identify candidates with the requisite aptitude, fitness, psychological and cognitive capabilities, attitude, integrity and character required for demanding field ranger duties. Only candidates who meet the required field ranger profile progress to Basic Field Ranger Training, tailored to the protected area’s operational environment, threats and challenges.
Competence is assessed through practical, written and oral evaluation, with management receiving an individual report on each participant’s competence and development needs. Only appropriately selected, trained, assessed and equipped personnel are deployed in demanding conservation law-enforcement roles.
04
Implement and Mentor
We guide and support protected-area management in implementing the Protected Area Security Plan and translating it into effective daily field operations.
Through our Mentorship Programme, senior, highly experienced protected-area managers work alongside resident management teams, transferring critical knowledge and building the internal capability to sustain results without long-term dependence on external support.
05
Monitor, Evaluate and Improve
Operational performance and implementation are monitored against the objectives set in the Plan and periodically reassessed to identify gaps and emerging needs. Gaps are addressed through targeted support and training. Operations and systems are adapted to changing threats and operating conditions.
This process sustains operational capability, protects the investment made in the protected area and maintains established standards.
